FULL BIOGRAPHY
Born Donald Ray Williams on May 27, 1939, in Ray Point, Texas, Don Williams served in the U.S. Army before beginning his music career with the folk-pop group The Pozo-Seco Singers during the 1960s. After the group disbanded, he moved to Nashville and launched a solo career that would make him one of country music's biggest stars.
Williams signed with JMI Records in the early 1970s and quickly found success with his smooth, relaxed vocal style and songs that emphasized love, faith, family, and everyday life. His calm delivery stood in contrast to many of the louder country performers of the era, earning him the nickname "The Gentle Giant."
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Williams became one of country music's most consistent hitmakers, recording classics such as "Tulsa Time," "I Believe in You," "Good Ole Boys Like Me," "Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good," "Amanda," and "It Must Be Love." He scored an extraordinary run of more than 40 Top 10 country hits and enjoyed international popularity, particularly in the United Kingdom, Australia, Africa, and Ireland.
Williams retired from touring in 2016 and passed away on September 8, 2017. His influence continues to be felt across country and Americana music, with artists praising his effortless vocals, timeless recordings, and sincere approach to songwriting.
